Son of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Mohamed Ghassaan Maumoon, has finally broken silence in the ongoing battle of the Gayooms, asserting his support for half-uncle President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
He made a rare appearance in a talk show on state media, speaking about his role in the present administration. Ghassaan asserted his support for President Yameen and his administration, stating that he was not under any compulsion to support this administration. He added that this has been his stance since 2012.
Ghassaan said that his father’s withdrawal of support for the administration and jailing his brother and Dhiggaru Constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon was not motive for him allying with President Yameen.
Stating that he fully believes in President Yameen’s vision, Ghassaan, who serves as State Minister at the President’s Office, said that he was one of the first who had seen President Yameen as a potential person to lead the nation back in 2012.
Ghassaaan also refuted rumors that his political stance had affected familial ties, citing that the family ties between his parents and siblings remained unchanged. He added that he had refrained from retaliating any political views and gossip as he did not believe it should be responded to.
