The government plans to keep Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom under house arrest until the end of the presidential election, says Maduvvaree MP Mohamed Ameeth.
Gayoom, the leader of the ruling party’s opposition faction, has recently been given military security at his residence in Male’, supposedly after an intel report of a death threat.
MP Ameeth said that the government could not imprison him using the courts, and so used the military to imprison him at his own home.
Military guards are reportedly taking note of visitors.
In a tweet on Tuesday night, Gayoom said he has asked authorities to clarify what the potential threat to him is, so that he can personally be on guard.
