Ahmed Mahloof, the Spokesperson of the opposition coalition, said that Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been placed under arrest to stifle them near the presidential election.
Maumoon, the leader of the opposition faction of the ruling party, has recently been given additional security at his home in Malé, supposedly in light of a report of a death threat.

Mahloof, the South Galolhu member of parliament claimed that the government couldn’t jail him like other political leaders, and so imprisoned him in his own home.
An associate of Maumoon said that since it is near the election, senior officials of President Abdulla Yameen’s administration has been meeting with opposition leaders.
