The suspect is reportedly the younger brother of a senior lawmaker of ruling party PPM.
In a tweet on Saturday, Gayoom said he was “deeply shocked” by the sexual assault of the 19-year-old.
“The culprit must be caught and brought to justice without delay.”
The victim was allegedly raped after she went to an art studio for a project last Wednesday, and was given money to remain quiet, reported some news outlets.
She reportedly gave a detailed description of the assault, and police have taken samples from her body.
The police service has confirmed that they are investigating such a case, but have refused to give details.
