Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom says the nation is now facing a political crisis. 

In his statement released on National Unity Day, President Maumoon urged all citizens to seek a solution to current crisis. He said that Maldivians have to reflect on the unity and cohesion that was seen following the Boxing Day Tsunami of 2004. President Maumoon said that it was imperative that we seek example from that to address the issues we faced today. 

The strongman warned that these were dark days for the nation, remarking that there were many facing persecution. 

In concluding his statement, President Maumoon said the opposition will remain united in resolving the current political crisis.
