Adeeb’s assassination attempt case filed, citing no cooperation

Maldives Police Service (MPS) has decided not to pursue ahead with the case filed by former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, over an alleged assassination attempt.

The authorities say that the case was filed as the defense for the former VP had not extended full cooperation to the investigation into the assassination attempt on Adeeb.

Adeeb’s lawyer, Moosa Siraj, denied the claims in a tweet he had posted. However, he said the Police had demanded that they disclose who had revealed the alleged assassination attempt. Siraj said they had disclosed all information pertinent to the case, apart from the identities of those officers who had alerted on the attempt. Siraj had attached the letter sent by MPS with the tweet.

The letter stated that the defense had not cooperated with the investigation and that the perpetrator was not discovered in their limited investigation. MPS added that they had discussed the case with Prosecutor General’s Office. PG Office decreed that there was no sufficient evidence to raise a criminal case and therefore the case was filed, until substantial information was accumulated.

Lawyers for Adeeb had alerted authorities on the attempt and filed the case back in July. The appeal sent to the Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef had appealed to investigate the attempt and take extra security measures.
