President sends sympathy message to US President, following NYC's terror attack

President Abdulla Yameen has sent a condolence message to President Donald Trump of the United States of America, following the 'terrorist attack' In New York.

In his message, the President said that he was "shocked and saddened to learn of the cowardly terrorist attack" in New York that resulted in the loss of innocent lives and serious injuries to many.

Noting that the Maldives "strongly condemns such acts of terror and violence perpetuated against innocent people," President Yameen emphasized that such attacks "serve no purpose other than instilling fear and distress".

On Tuesday, a truck driver plowed through a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center memorial in lower Manhattan, fatally hitting eight people, in New York's deadliest terror attack since 9/11.

The suspect, 29-year-old Uzbekistan native Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, was charged with federal terrorism offences, less than 24 hours after the attack.

Calling the act "pure evil", President Trump has said that Saipov should be executed.
