The Corruption watchdog for the Maldives, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has confirmed that a total of 27 cases had been submitted related to the list of recipients of flats issued by Housing Ministry.

Media official for the Commission reported that 27 cases were filed and that they were reviewing the cases.

No details of the flat recipients were released in the list issued by Housing Ministry. The recipients were identified by their form numbers. This had prompted criticism and public outcry, with many claiming that those who had earned more points did not receive flats.

This, many said, pointed to corruption and undue gains. This came amid claims that President Yameen’s campaign office had contacted applicants.

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizz said the identities of recipients were not disclosed, citing privacy concerns. To this date, the Minister had refused to divulge the highest points possible under their scheme.

Housing Ministry had published the final list of recipients, while ACC was investigating the case.

The case had also been filed with the Government Oversight Committee, with Housing Ministry refusing to disclose the details of flat recipients to the Committee.

The flats in Hulhumale’ are three-bedroom apartments. As down payment, recipients will have to pay MVR 25,000 and monthly payments of MVR 6,000 for 25 years. Based on these figures flat owners will have to pay MVR 1.8 million if they are to own the flats.
