President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom has opened up the mosque built in Vilingili island in Gaaf Alif Atoll, on grant aid by Saudi monarch Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud.

The mosque, named Masjid al-Ikhlas, was opened on Tuesday, as part of the current tour of the atoll undertaken by the First Couple.

Following the opening, President Yameen had observed the sunset prayers in congregation. The mosque has a capacity of 700 people. Construction of the mosque began in November 25, 2015 and completed on May 25th. Ministry of Islamic Affairs said MVR 8 million was spent on the construction.

Much of Saudi grant aid to Maldives had gone to construction on mosques in the country.
