The Ministry of Environment and Energy signed an agreement to initiate sewage and drainage projects in Ukulhas of Alifu Alifu atoll without informing the island’s local government council.

RaajjeMV was made aware of this by the council and a reliable source from within the ministry has confirmed it.

Shaukath Ibrahim, the council’s chair, said that thirty percent of the funds for the project had been garnered by his office. The project in Ukulhas are worth over MVR 25 million.

"This is why we believe we are entitled to be made aware of the agreement. This is not the case, and the government is yet to officially inform us of it" Shaukath said.

Housing Minister Mohamed Muizzu had signed the contract on behalf of the government along with Static Company Pvt Ltd as Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim is currently out of the country.

People who attended the ceremony reported having experienced an unconventional ordeal, as the audience was filled with guests in casual clothing – despite the formal attire usually mandated at such events.

Photographs of the event show that guests holding copies of the agreements between the government and the company, which too is unconventional as details of such projects are most often kept between parties that had signed the agreement.
