High Court cancels hearing for MP Faris Maumoon's appeal of his detention
High Court judges have held previous hearings for the appeal filed by the parliamentarian
There have been changes brought to the composition of judges adjudicating on the case and to the section under which it was filed
Faris’ legal team has filed five successive habeas corpus writs since his arrest over bribery allegations on July 18

The High Court has cancelled its hearing for MP Faris Maumoon’s appeal of the lower court’s decision to remand him.

High Court judges have held previous hearings for the appeal filed by the parliamentarian, who is facing allegations of bribery, and the court is to now make a decision.

There have been changes brought to the composition of judges adjudicating on the case and to the section under which it was filed.

The appeal case was previously heard by judges Abdul Rauf, Ali Sameer, and Abdulla Didi. Judge Ali Sameer has now been replaced by Judge Shujaau Usman.

Faris’ legal team has filed five successive habeas corpus writs since his arrest over bribery allegations on July 18. Lawyer Ibrahim Shameel said that the last of these were filed on Wednesday.

Shameel claimed that the prosecution had failed to bring forth charges against the parliamentarians within the legally mandates thirty-day window for it, therefore constituting a violation of the Criminal Procedure Act.

State prosecutors are also looking to file charges of identity fraud against Faris, for having used the ruling party’s flag and logo at a joint press conference with leaders of the opposition.
