Maldives cut trade ties with Myanmar

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has condemned the atrocities against Rohingya Muslims of Burma.

In a tweet posted on Monday, the former President said the international community must take steps to stop the genocide.

Maldives had severed economic ties with Myanmar, citing the treatment of Rohingya Muslims.

The statement by Foreign Ministry noted that “Rohingya Muslim minority continues to suffer under systematic repression and the United Nations has in the past documented such human rights violations against this minority group”.

It also said that the international community must act swiftly and firmly to stop the bloodshed.

Maldives first established diplomatic ties on January 15, 1970, closely followed by trade ties.
