Case filed in SC over the issue of seats

Formal charges have been raised against Vilingili Constituency MP Saud Hussain, Maduvvari Constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth and Thulusdhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Waheed for having trespassed Parliament premises.

The charges were raised against the MPs for having entered Parliament premises, after Elections Commission had stripped them from their Parliament seats. Charges were first filed on Thursday. Additional charges of obstruction had been raised on the three.

The Supreme Court ruling states that MPs who switch parties, quit or is expelled after winning their parliament seat on a political party ticket, will lose their seats. Following this ruling, EC and Parliament had decreed that MPs Waheed, Ameeth, Saud, Abdul Latheef Mohamed, Abdullah Sinan and Ilham Ahmed had been stripped from their seats.

The three MPs had filed case in Supreme Court over the EC decision; the Court is yet to make a decision on the case.
