The Taxi Drivers' Association has called for the immediate release of arrested drivers and towed taxis. In a statement released by the association, it was stated that the heavy traffic in Hulhumalé on the night of December 11 was due to the actions of the Maldives Police Service (MPS). The association said that arresting drivers and towing cars is a major financial loss for drivers and is an act of cruelty.
The association has called for an immediate stop to this cruel act. The statement also said that they will continue to raise their voices for the release of arrested drivers and taxis.
While the association has issued such a statement, taxi drivers have also decided to hold a peaceful protest to call for the release of arrested taxi drivers.
The first gathering organized by the drivers was held on Friday night. Regarding this, the community of taxi drivers said that the protest taking place in the ‘Ruhgandu’ area will be conducted as peaceful gatherings.
Drivers have said that the purpose of these gatherings is to call for the release of arrested drivers and the release of cars that have not been released from among those that were towed. Drivers have said that these gatherings will be held in a series and will not stop until a solution is found for the drivers' concerns.
