The government of Maldives has announced the decision to increase its annual contribution to the people of Palestine.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) was established under a 1948 United Nations Assembly decision, in a bid to aid the people of Palestine.

Maldives has been contributing USD 5,000 to this fund annually.

The decision to increase the donation from USD 5,000 to USD 50,000 was announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer, at the launching ceremony of the nationwide fundraising telethon campaign on Wednesday.

As such, FM Zameer announced that the Maldivian government has decided to increase its annual contribution to this fund.

The government is to contribute USD 50,000 annually, henceforth.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu urged the people to make the largest contribution in the country’s history, to Palestinians, as part of this telethon.

The nationwide fundraising telethon campaign is titled “Falastheenaa Eku Dhivehin” which translated means “Maldivians with Palestine”.

Speaking at the event, President Muizzu called to ensure Wednesday sees the largest contribution made by the people of Maldives, to the people of Palestine.

Expressing hope that the funds raised during the campaign will have a significant impact on the lives of the Palestinian people, Muizzu shed light on the urgent need to provide assistance to the people of Palestine.

Stressing that the Muslim Ummah needs to take all necessary steps to ensure that every Muslim is aware of their rights and responsibilities towards the Palestinian cause now more than ever, Muizzu urged the Maldivian people to show their generosity in abundance, during the fundraising.

Before concluding his remarks, the Maldivian leader expressed his unwavering belief that the solidarity of Maldivians with Palestine, would be demonstrated as part of this event.

Muizzu encouraged all citizens to continue supporting Palestine.

An independent auditor was appointed to ensure the transparent administration of the telethon, upon the president’s instructions.

This will also ensure the proceeds of the event reach Palestine as intended.

Organized by the Public Service Media (PSM) in collaboration with other local media outlets, the telethon will proceed throughout Wednesday.

13 donation boxes have been set up in several areas of the capital Greater Malé Region, as part of this telethon.

Those who are unable to visit these areas to make a donation may opt to make an online deposit.
