Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) António Guterres has applauded the active engagement of Maldives on the frontlines of climate justice.
He said this during a meeting held with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Monday.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) being held in Antigua and Barbuda from May 27 – 30.
During the meeting the Maldivian leader reiterated his administration's commitment to enhance the close ties between the UN and the Maldives.
Commending the island nation’s active engagement on the frontlines of climate justice, the UNSG assured his full support in these efforts.
Discussions also revolved around the challenges faced by the Maldives as a SIDS.
They also talked about ways to overcome these challenges, including complex financial negotiations hindering development efforts.
Before concluding the meeting, the Maldivian leader and the UNSG expressed mutual enthusiasm to boost collaboration and strengthen the existing ties.
