President Solih visited the island to participate in the national-level celebrations of World Environment Day 2023

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has concluded his two-day official visit to Ukulhas Island in the Alifu Alifu Atoll.

He arrived in the island on Monday, 05 June to participate in the national-level celebrations of World Environment Day 2023.

On Monday, President Solih took part in the official function held to commemorate World Environment Day 2023. Taking the podium at the event, President Solih highlighted the administration's objective to the transition of the Maldives into a nation that prioritizes environmentally friendly energy generation.

The President also noted the administration's commitment to promoting sustainable waste management practices and reducing the reliance on single-use plastics. He highlighted that the administration has implemented a comprehensive plan to phase out 13 types of single-use plastics and has successfully reduced single-use plastic imports by 50 per cent.

The President also highlighted the administration is considering to assist non-governmental organizations through the fund, demonstrating the administration's commitment to supporting relevant initiatives.

During his visit, the President visited the "Beat Plastic Pollution" festival. The festival showcased information about waste recycling, garbage disposal, and waste segregation. It also featured exhibits made of recycled plastic.

The top three videos created for the competition were presented during the event. 

Before he concluded his trip, the President on Tuesday, met with the Island Council and the Women's Development Committee (WDC) members of Ukulhas Island.

During the meeting, the President and the council members discussed the island's socioeconomic development and the concerns of the island's residents.

The meeting saw President Solih stressing the administration's commitment to consulting with the public and seeking their opinion on its developmental plans. He reaffirmed that the administration would thoroughly examine the matters raised and engage in further discussions with relevant government offices and institutions.

President Solih concluded his trip and returned to Malé City on Tuesday, 06 June.
