The Villingili Social Service Center has been constituted.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih constituted the center in Villingili under the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Social Services, on Monday.
This announcement was made in the 2023/03 directive issued by the President’s Office.
The Villingili Social Service Center was constituted in a bid to modernize social protection efforts in the Greater Malé Region.
It is mandated to provide temporary protection for those in need in the GMR as well as a place to plan and implement social security for Villingili residents.
Conducting awareness programmes also comes under the mandate of the center.
The President’s Office went on to reveal that President Solih has instructed the social service centers for the elderly or "Israhvehinge Ijthimaaee Marukazuthah" to be included under the mandate of the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Social Services.
These instructions were given in a bid to expand the role of the elderly within society and provide them with a social support plan.
Said centers will also conduct programmes to ensure their health along with organizing sports and recreational activities suitable for the elderly.
Further, the ‘Kudakudhinge Hiyaa’, ‘Amaan Hiyaa’ and the ‘Thauleemaai Masakkaiy Ungannaidhey Kudakudhinge Marukazu’ have been abolished by the president. This was done following other arrangements having been made to carry on the work previously carried out by these institutions.
The changes were brought under the power vested in the president by Section 116 (a) of the Constitution of Maldives.
The directive issued by the President’s Office provides a detailed explanation on the purpose of bringing the changes and the advantages of doing so.
