Cases of child sexual abuse were reported more frequently over the course of the past two or three years, reveals Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.
Speaking at the Human Rights and Gender Committee meeting of the People’s Majlis on Wednesday, PG Shameem revealed that the increased frequency of such cases being reported, paves way for authorities to efficiently attain evidence linked to such cases.
PG Shameem also expressed belief that the increase in child abuse cases being reported, is because of the increase in public awareness, lately.
Noting that the process to seek evidence has also improved, PG Shameem stated that the percentage of cases where charges are being proven against suspects, is also snowballing.
As such, Shameem highlighted that the number of cases where the charges have been proven against the suspects have increased significantly over the past years, compared to the period between 2010 – 2020.
The PG went on to note that the public trust in the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has also increased, notably.
The meeting also saw PG Shameem detailing the difficulties and challenges facing the PG's office in proceeding with such cases.
