Family files request with HRCM to observe ex-VP’s condition
Adeeb’s spouse filed the request
Had requested for a thorough observation of Adeeb’s cell, medication
Adeeb jailed for 33 years

The family of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb had filed request with Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) to conduct a thorough observation of the cell and medication provided to him.

Spouse Mariyam Nasra sent in the letter on Wednesday, stating the various conditions that had been diagnosed since Adeeb was jailed.

The letter added that both Maldives Police Service (MPS) and Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) had been negligent and that it must be investigated.

Noting that he had been diagnosed with glaucoma, Nasra said officials had administered medication twice a day. However, she said the family had no idea what medication and in what dosage it was administered in. She added the medication had failed to provide any respite, as reported by Adeeb.

The letter further noted the treatment of others at jail, including similar ocular issues with Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim and MP Ahmed Mahloof who was sent abroad for treatment due to food poisoning.

The letter had requested HRCM to conduct regular visits to jail to observe Adeeb’s cell and inquire on the food and medication provided to Adeeb.

Adeeb, who has been jailed for 33 years, had filed on many occasions for medical leave on account of his various medical conditions. His family and lawyers have warned that his life was in immediate danger and required urgent medical treatment.

Adeeb’s family had sent letters to both the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) and Maldives Police Service (MPS), asking to allow him to travel abroad for medical treatment. However, both institutions refused to take responsibility, with MPS saying that MCS has the power to do so. MCS says that Adeeb is not under the facility.

Adeeb’s family had, earlier in June, released a statement claiming that he has developed an internal cyst, kidney stones and vision impairment from glaucoma since his incarceration in 2015.

Adeeb’s lawyer Moosa Siraj said that the former VP has to be given the necessary medical care, adding that there is a lot they had not revealed about his condition before.
