Maldives aims to welcome 1.6 million tourists this year

Tourist arrivals recorded so far in the Golden Jubilee Year of Maldives tourism have exceeded 680,000.

This was revealed by the Ministry of Tourism in the latest weekly statistics, publicized on Thursday.

Statistics revealed that so far in the Golden Jubilee Year of tourism, Maldives has welcomed a total of 680,846 tourists.

Between January 1 – May 25 this year, the arrivals figure saw an increase of 52.8 percent compared to the same period of 2021. It is however, a decline of 6.8 percent compared to the figures recorded in 2019.

131,764 tourists were welcomed during January and 149,008 arrivals were recorded in February, followed by 150,739 arrivals in March and 145,280 during April.

So far in May, Maldives has welcomed 104,046 arrivals, which is an 86.5 percent growth compared to the arrivals recorded in 2021 and a 22.9 percent increase from the figure recorded in 2019.

The statistics go on to indicate that tourists are staying in the Maldives for an average of eight days this promising year, with daily arrivals being maintained at an average of 4,695. The highest daily arrivals so far in April remain at 4,162.

Daily tourist arrivals recorded so far in May are as follows:

  • 7,445 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 1
  • 5,982 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 2
  • 5,604 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 3
  • 4,821 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 4
  • 4,073 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 5
  • 4,340 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 6
  • 4,067 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 7
  • 4,597 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 8
  • 3,914 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 9
  • 3,363 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 10
  • 3,713 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 11
  • 3,410 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 12
  • 3,428 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 13
  • 3,871 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 14
  • 4,309 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 15
  • 4,218 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 16
  • 3,455 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 17
  • 3,640 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 18
  • 3,015 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 19
  • 3,454 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 20
  • 3,558 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 21
  • 4,337 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 22
  • 4,032 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 23
  • 3,582 tourist arrivals were recorded on May 24

Although Russia had maintained its position as the top source market for Maldives tourism in the past, India has once again become the top tourist market for Maldives, contributing 13.2 percent of the total arrival figure by May 24.

86,358 arrivals were recorded from India by May 18.

Second comes the United Kingdom, contributing 12.6 percent with 82,325 arrivals.

Coming in third is Russia contributing 9.5 percent with 62,545 arrivals.

Although Ukraine was also included among the top 10 markets for Maldives tourism earlier, it has since been replaced. Arrivals from Ukraine have been plummeting due to the ongoing war.  

Other top tourism markets so far in 2022 are:

  • Germany contributing 8.6 percent with 56,058 arrivals
  • Italy contributing 6.7 percent with 43,748 arrivals
  • United States contributing 4.6 percent with 30,391 arrivals
  • France contributing 4.2 percent with 27,488 arrivals
  • Switzerland contributing 2.6 percent with 16,769 arrivals
  • Saudi Arabia contributing 2.1 percent with 13,854 arrivals
  • Austria contributing 1.9 percent with 12,468 arrivals

It has been 50 years since zealous travelers have been visiting the Maldives which has been drawing in visitors with its picturesque beauty for years.

Maldives marks 50 years in 2022 since the tourism industry’s inception in 1972.

During 2020, Maldives recorded 555,494 tourist arrivals, which was a drastic plunge from the previous year’s 1,702,887 arrivals. Maldives met its tourist arrival target for 2021 in late December and welcomed a total of 1,321,932 tourists by the end of the year.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in his presidential address on February 3, revealed that Maldives aims to welcome 1.6 million tourists this year.
