Rescue officers have on Tuesday said that their search for police Corporal Mohamed Sumaid, who went missing off of Addu City on Sunday, is still ongoing at full speed.

Ibrahim Azim, the Maldives National Defence Force’s media official, said that rescue officers are operating through air and sea in search of the police officer.

While they are also investigating the circumstances surrounding Corporal Sumaid’s disappearance, Azim said that investigative officers cannot confirm anything at this time.

Sumaid’s disappearance was reported to the MNDF at around 8:30 pm on Sunday night. While the MNDF’s Coast Guard had dispatched their southern squadron immediately, there is yet to be any new information on Corporal Sumaid.

On Monday, hours after the military dispatched a helicopter to assist with the search, officers had found Sumaid’s mobile phone near Gan of Addu City, where the incident is reported to have occurred.

Sumaid was on a fishing expedition on a dinghy with two of his friends, when the boat had reportedly capsized.
