Tourist arrivals increase by 91.2 percent for 2021

Within the first three months of this year, a gradual increase is seen from month to month

The Tourism Ministry has declared that the number of tourist arrivals in the Maldives have increased by 91.2 percent this year, compared to last year.

According to statistics publicized by the Tourism Ministry, while a total of 391,832 tourist arrivals were reported by August 29, during last year, 749,186 arrivals were reported within the same time period in 2021.

Looking at the number of tourists that arrived to the Maldives, within the first three months of this year, a gradual increase is seen from month to month – 92,103 tourists were reported in January, 96,882 in February and 109,585 in March. It is to be noted that more than 100,000 tourists had arrived in the Maldives for the first time after borders reopened in March, due to temporarily being closed in regards to the then worsening situation of Covid-19.

This number began to decline starting from April – 91,200 tourist arrivals were recorded in April, 64,613 in May and 56,166 in June. Once again, the numbers increased in July to 101,818 which is the third month to report the highest number of tourist arrivals this year.

August 2021, marks the highest number of tourist arrivals with a total of 136,819 tourist arrivals recorded until the 29th. Statistics show that 4,718 tourists are arriving in the Maldives daily, with their average stay-period recorded at nine days.

Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom stated that he predicts that 1.3 million tourist arrivals will be recorded by the end of the year, at the rate the tourist arrival tally is growing.
