The administrative capital of Shaviyani atoll, Funadhoo was earlier known as an uninhabited island, "Farukolhu Funadhoo". Residents began inhabiting the island since 1 January 1968. The name "Funadhoo" caught on since 12 March 1995. The island in nestled into the rim of Miladhunmathi atoll and is home to one of the largest communities spanning the archipelago nation.
