‘Everyone knows state institutions are being used for unlawful conduct’: MP Faris
President Yameen had been repeatedly ordering the police to arrest him
A minister has been visiting police offices late at night to interfere with police operations
The police service and the courts were fulfilling orders ‘like robots’

Dhiggaru MP Faris Maumoon has said that everyone knows state institutions are being used to conduct unlawful actions.

He said this to journalists on Saturday, prior to his arrest for the second time.

MP Faris told journalists that he had met with police commissioner Ahmed Areef earlier on Saturday. He said the commissioner told him that President Abdulla Yameen had been repeatedly ordering the police service to arrest him.

Citing the commissioner, Faris said that a minister also visits the police offices late at night, to interfere with police operations.

He appealed employees to not remain silent on these issues, adding that the citizens’ expectations should be fulfilled from the bottom up.

He also said that, during his time in police custody, he did not experience any abuse from employees, but did see them carry out orders from senior officials moving a specific agenda forward.

He added that the police service and the courts were fulfilling unlawful orders ‘like robots’.

Faris was arrested on Saturday, following his release two days ago after 191 days in custody over bribery charges.

He was arrested this time over allegations of planning to overthrow the government.

The police have also searched his house as well as the home of his father, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
