Former Minister Dr. Aishath Rameela has been appointed as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

She took her oath of office during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Wednesday, after which she signed the declaration formalizing her appointment.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appointed her under Article 190(b) of the Constitution and Article 5(a) of Law Number 6/2006, the Human Rights Commission Act.

The oath was administered by Supreme Court Justice Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim and the president handed her the official letter of appointment during the same ceremony.

Dr. Rameela previously served as the first Agriculture Minister in the current administration. She resigned from that position on 1 December 2024, citing the need for medical treatment for cancer.

Before her ministerial role, she twice served as State Minister at the Ministry of Health.

On October 29, 63 lawmakers took part in a vote on her nomination to HRCM and the floor unanimously approved her appointment.
