Sofwan Ahmed, who served as head coach of the Maldives senior national women's volleyball team, has been suspended and relieved of his duties by the Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM).
RaajjeMV understands that VAM made the decision to suspend Sofwan as part of an ongoing internal investigation. While the exact nature of the allegations remains undisclosed, the association has taken steps to distance him from the team during the inquiry.
The situation has raised concerns among media professionals seeking transparency. Journalists raised questions in VAM’s official media group, asking for clarity on the nature of the investigation and whether VAM President Mohamed Latheef was compromised in any way. Instead of addressing these concerns directly, Latheef responded by restricting the group’s settings, limiting message-sending privileges to administrators only.
Following the restrictions, Latheef posted a brief message stating he was not compromised and noted that specific responses involving individuals would only be given once investigations are complete. He further claimed that VAM is committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for both male and female athletes participating in national team and association activities.
However, critics argue that the association’s handling of the situation lacks transparency and undermines public trust. The sudden removal of a coach from a national team, combined with evasive communication, raises more questions than answers, particularly at a time when sports organizations are under increasing pressure to uphold accountability and safeguard athlete welfare.
In the wake of Sofwan's suspension, training sessions for the women’s national team are now being overseen by Mohamed Nadheem as the team prepares for upcoming competitions.
While VAM has pledged to take appropriate action once investigations conclude, the lack of clear communication and the decision to restrict journalist engagement suggest a reluctance to address serious issues openly, casting doubt on the association’s commitment to transparency and due process.
