Aishath Muzna, the wife of Mohamed “Shaad” Shahid, MP for Hulhudhoo constituency and a representative of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), has been appointed to the Board of Directors at the State Electric Company (STELCO).
According to the Privatization and Corporatization Board (PCB), Muzna’s appointment follows the removal of former board member Mohamed Amir.
In addition to her new role on the board, Muzna currently serves as the Deputy Managing Director of STELCO, a position she was appointed to on 28 November 2023, shortly after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu assumed office. Muzna has a long history with the company, having begun her career at STELCO in 2000.
Her appointment to the board has drawn criticism from some quarters, with concerns raised over the growing trend of political appointees' family members being placed in senior roles within state-owned enterprises, government bodies, and commissions.
