A case has been filed at the Civil Court to prevent the appointment of Mohamed Shaheed, who until recently held a political position in the current government, as a judge of the High Court.

The case was filed on Thursday. He was serving in the position of Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The case to prevent Shaheed's appointment to the High Court was filed by lawyer Ahmed Naushad, who also applied for the position of judge at that court. Naushad has requested a temporary injunction to halt the process until the case is resolved.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has decided to appoint a former activist of the main ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) and a former judge to fill two vacant judge positions at the High Court.

According to JSC, they have decided to appoint Mohamed Shaheed from Fuvahmulah City, and Abdulla Jameel Moosa from Maavah island of Laamu atoll to the High Court. JSC stated that Shaheed and Jameel were approved to be appointed to the High Court at a meeting held on Wednesday. However, details of the meeting and the vote have not been disclosed.

Among them, Shaheed is a person who openly backed President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and PNC in the recent presidential election and the subsequent parliamentary election. In addition to this, he has spoken at various PNC podiums and other PNC platforms.
