The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed that the occupancy rate of resorts in the Maldives has decreased in May this year compared to May 2024.

While the occupancy rate was at 45 percent in May 2024, it has dropped to 43 percent in May this year.

In May 2025, the total number of tourists arrived reached 135,614. This is a 13 percent increase compared to May 2024. However, the total tourist bed nights have decreased by approximately one percent. During May this year, resort bed nights decreased by five percent, while guesthouse bed nights increased by 37 percent.

The increase in the number of tourists arriving in the Maldives is mainly due to tourists from China and major European markets. During May, the top tourist source markets were China, Russia, India, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

In May 2025, while the number of operational beds in the tourism industry increased by 2,328, the occupancy rate decreased from 45 percent in May 2024 to 43 percent in May 2025.

Overall, from January to May 2025, the total number of tourists increase of tourists increased by eight percent on an annual basis, while total bed nights decreased by one percent. During this period, the average duration of stay for tourists in the Maldives has decreased from 7.7 days in 2024 to 6.8 days so far this year.
