Ibrahim Shameel has been elected as the Vice President of the Executive Committee of the Bar Council of the Maldives.
The Bar Council held the second round of online elections through "Fahivote" on June 19 to elect a Vice President and two members to the Executive Committee.
In a press release, the Bar Council stated that as the terms of the current Vice President and four members of the Executive Committee of the Bar Council of the Maldives will end on 14 July 2025, an election was held on 26 May 2025, to select members for the Executive Committee. In the election, Abdulla Nahid and Ahmed Shafiu were elected as members of the Executive Committee.
The press release also mentioned that five candidates who met the eligibility criteria competed in the second round of the election following the announcement to elect members to the Executive Committee. It was noted that 1,086 lawyers had registered to vote in the election.
In the election, Ibrahim Shameel, who ran for the position of Vice President of the Executive Committee, received 291 votes, while his opponent, Ma’asha Luthufee, received 216 votes. Three candidates vied for the committee member positions including Samaahath Abdul Latheef who received 146 votes, Abdulla Nahid who received 294 votes, and Ahmed Shafiu who received 284 votes.
Consequently, the Bar Council has announced that the second round of the recently concluded election has resulted in the selection of a Vice President and two members for the Executive Committee of the Bar Council.
