Members of The Democrats, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, have decided to rejoin the main opposition
The Democrats party believes joining MDP is the best way to win the upcoming Local Council Elections, improve the country's future, and maintain an accountable state
Although The Democrats have decided to join MDP, the party has stated that it will continue to exist as a separate entity

Members of The Democrats have voted to join the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The decision for other members, including the party's president and former President Mohamed Nasheed, to rejoin MDP was made at an informal National Assembly meeting held on June 17.

With this decision, former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Deputy Speaker of the People's Majlis Eva Abdulla have decided to rejoin MDP.

RaajjeMV’s attempts to get a comment on this matter from some senior party officials were to no avail.

However, RaajjeMV understands that The Democrats’ National Assembly made this decision after extensive discussions among members.

Although The Democrats have made this decision, the party has stated that it will continue to exist.

Further, The Democrats believe this is the best way to win the upcoming Local Council Elections, improve the country's future, and maintain an accountable state. The party has stated that they believe it is important for many people to work together to run a strong opposition, which is seen as the best way to restore the diminishing trust in the multi-party competitive political system.

The resolution passed by the informal National Assembly states that to achieve this goal, the members of The Democrats commit to joining MDP.
