The People's Majlis has passed a motion to dismiss Supreme Court Justices Dr. Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir.

In Wednesday’s sitting of the People’s Majlis, 68 lawmakers voted in favor of dismissing Justices Azmiralda and Mahaz, while 11 lawmakers voted against it.

As a result, both individuals have been removed from their positions as Supreme Court Justices.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) decided to dismiss the two judges in a case where Justice Azmiralda and Mahaz were accused of influencing Criminal Court judges to release Dr. Ismail Latheef, Azmiralda's spouse and a doctor at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), before he was brought in for arrest and detention following his apprehension at a massage parlor.

Parliament's Counsel General Fathimath Filza advised the committee that JSC had violated the law by not completing the proper procedures when investigating the case.

Further, Justices Azmiralda and Mahaz were not given the opportunity to respond to the allegations in connection with the case.

The dismissal of Justices Azmiralda and Mahaz comes at a time when various foreign law firms and organizations have called for the suspension of the matter. Many legal experts have stated that there is no legal justification for dismissing the two judges and that this is not an acceptable action. Many lawyers from the Bar Council have also expressed concern about how the case has proceeded.
