Drugs being smuggled into Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll have been confiscated.

The drugs were seized during a joint operation conducted by officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) stationed in Villingili island of Gaaf Alif atoll as well as officers of the Police Intelligence unit.

The operation was conducted as part of the ongoing efforts to hinder drug smuggling and trafficking attempts across the island nation, as well as to crackdown on such networks.

The join operation was conducted on April 4.

It stemmed from intel reports regarding an attempt to smuggle drugs into Villingili on a boat traveling from the capital Malé City, to the island.

As part of the operation, the boat was raided and searched as soon as it docked at the island’s harbor, under a court order.

A larger rubber packet suspected to contain drugs was found during the raid.

The provisional weight of the package was 231 grams.

So far, no one has been arrested in connection with the case.

However, further investigations are currently underway in connection with the case, at the Villingili Police Station.
