A foreigner who stole from a shop has been remanded until the end of his trial.
The person remanded is a 24-year-old Sri Lankan national named Vijendra Waduge Nirasha Rasali, who is suspected of stealing money from a shop's cash register.
He is accused of theft from the shop. The Criminal Court order for his remand states that sufficient evidence has been presented against him.
In addition to this, the remand order highlighted that the suspect’s statement as well as CCTV snapshots show him taking money from the shop's cash register.
The exact amount of money he took is not clear from the court order.
The reasons given for his remand are based on Article 49 of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives and Articles 59 and 60 of the Criminal Procedure Code, citing potential danger to society.
Further, it was noted that since he is a Sri Lankan citizen, there is a possibility he might flee the country.
