Legal counsel Mohamed Nishan Ibrahim has stated that President Dr. Muizzu is issuing illegal orders to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).
He made this statement while speaking at a protest held by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Saturday night.
Nishan said that the police institution needs to learn to work within legal boundaries. He said that the president was handed over the presidency in November 2023 with great hope. He added that it is the president's duty to uphold the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, and that he does not see this principle being followed.
The president was entrusted with the country to govern according to the law. Not to betray the Constitution. I remind the Maldivian Police to return to the law. Orders can only be given in accordance with constitutional powers. Do not obey orders given otherwise."

The renowned lawyer said that the right to protest is a right granted to every person and that this right cannot be taken away. He also said that it is shameful to infringe on the right to freedom of expression through the police. Nishan has stated that if any police officer is dismissed for disobeying an illegal order, he will provide the necessary legal assistance to those police officers.
