Both emergency motions submitted to the People’s Majlis regarding delays in investigating the case of Zakiyya Moosa of New Life, Holhudhoo island of Noonu atoll, who was found dead with injuries, have been rejected and dismissed by the People’s Majlis.
The two lawmakers who submitted emergency motions regarding Zakiyya’s death case were MP for Kanditheemu Constituency Ameen Faisal and MP for Velidhoo Constituency Mohamed Abbas.
The two lawmakers have urged to investigate the reason for the delay in the probe and expediting the matter in the emergency motions.
However, during Wednesday's parliamentary sitting, Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla who chaired the sitting, ruled that both motions did not meet the requirements for emergency motions.
The speaker explained that this was because the matter did not occur within the past seven days.
Although the lawmakers who submitted the emergency motions expressed great dissatisfaction with the chair's decision, the chair's ruling was not changed.
Regarding Zakiyya's death, the police most recently stated that they are seeking assistance from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation in the investigation of the death of Zakiyya Moosa from N. Holhudhoo.
Regarding Zakiyya's death, at a press conference held on 3 December 2024, Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Saamih said that according to the doctor's information, the cause of Zakiyya's death was identified as injuries to her neck. Therefore, Saamih said that based on the findings of the investigation so far, there is no evidence to suggest that the injuries Zakiyya sustained or her death were the result of any action by another party, and no involvement of another person has been identified in the case at this point.
Saamih said that three deep wounds were found on Zakiyya's left side, two deep wounds on her right side, and one shallow wound in the middle of her neck.
While police have stated that they are continuing to investigate Zakiyya's death case, residents of the island had taken to the streets and raised their voices in January 2025 as well, claiming that the police have been grossly negligent in handling Zakiyya's death case. Many residents of the island, including her family, have expressed concerns about the case.
