Some senior members of ‘The Democrats’, including the party's Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, have signed onto the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Speaking to RaajjeMV, a reliable source revealed that in addition to Shifaz, former parliamentarian Ali Azim, who is a member of ‘The Democrats' council, and Ibrahim Rasheed, who served as the Managing Director of the Greater Malé Industrial Zone Limited in the previous administration, have also signed onto MDP.

It is understood that these three individuals signed up for MDP at some point on Friday night.

In addition to these three individuals, Hussain Amru, the first Managing Director of State Trading Organization (STO) during the former rule of MDP, has also rejoined the main opposition party.

Further, it has been reported that some other senior members of The Democrats are also scheduled to sign up for MDP within the coming week.

Among those signing up for MDP are members of The Democrats' council and some former parliamentarians.

The Democrats was formed in 2023 following a rift within MDP. However, recently, the two parties have been working together unofficially. Notably, the two parties have been observed working on the same platform in defense of the Constitution of Maldives. This collides with a time MDP is preparing to hold a large gathering in defense of the Constitution.

While some senior members of The Democrats are signing onto MDP, RaajjeMV understands that some senior members of MDP have met with former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and some senior members of The Democrats as well.
