The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s National Congress has passed a resolution to take to the streets in defense of the Constitution of Maldives.

The main opposition party decided to take to the streets after passing a resolution at their National Congress meeting held on Wednesday night. At Wednesday’s meeting, the chair proposed to take to the streets on 31 January 2025 "in defense of the Constitution."

No member of the National Congress objected to the proposal put forward by the chair. This is the first time the MDP has passed a resolution to take to the streets in advance, planning a major event to hold President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's government accountable.

MDP had also held a large rally last December under the name "In Defense of the Constitution" to hold the government accountable. The rally held at Carnival region was the largest gathering organized by MDP since they began their efforts to hold the government accountable from the opposition.

At December’s rally, a petition was presented and passed at a National Congress meeting, demanding the annulment of the amendments made to the Constitution of Maldives and ordering both the People’s Majlis and the president not to do anything that could potentially diminish the people's sovereignty.
