MDP to discuss how to proceed with work related to constitutional amendments during Wednesday’s National Congress meeting
The 19th session of the fourth term of the party's National Congress will be held on Wednesday

The main oppositionMaldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that they have planned to discuss how to proceed with the party's work in relation to the constitutional amendments brought by the current administration.

MDP’s National Congress had previously passed a resolution to support and work towards re-electing any member who loses their seat at the People’s Majlis after being expelled from the party for joining MDP during the period the constitutional amendment remains in effect, in the by-election for the member's constituency.

The resolution proposed by MDP National Congress Kolamaafushi Constituency President Mahfooz Saeed stated that Article 4 of the Constitution stipulates that all powers of the state originate from and remain with the citizens. It also stated that the amendment brought to Article 73 of the Constitution with the sixth amendment to the Constitution deprives citizens of the power vested in them by Article 4 of the Constitution. It was noted that the amendment brought to the Constitution by the current administration is contrary to the framework of the Constitution.

The resolution was passed at the "In Defense of the Constitution" session held by MDP on 10 December 2024.

Speaking to RaajjeMV, MDP's Vice Chairperson for Administration Ibrahim Waheed said that in line with the previously passed resolution, they will discuss the work to be done this year and make necessary arrangements accordingly.

He said that the agenda for the MDP National Congress meeting to be held on Wednesday is not yet finalized. He noted that the meeting is being held to give members the opportunity to submit matters and said that the agenda will be finalized on Wednesday.

In addition to this, speaking to RaajjeMV, Vice Chairperson for Finance Ahmed Abdulla also noted that some administrative work will be done at Wednesday’s meeting. He said that the National Congress will form a committee to work on implementing the previously passed resolution.

According to the main opposition party, the 19th session of the fourth term of the party's National Congress will be held on Wednesday, 8 January 2025, at 8:30pm at the MDP Secretariat.
