The governments of Maldives and Tajikistan have signed a visa exemption agreement.

On Wednesday, a ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of Tajikistan in New York City where an Agreement on Mutual Exemption of Visa Requirements was signed, formalizing the exemption of visa requirements for nationals of both countries for a period of 30 days.

On behalf of the Maldivian government, Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed signed the bilateral agreement, with Permanent Representative of the Republic of Tajikistan to the United Nations Hikmat Jonibek Ismoil signing the agreement on behalf of the government of Tajikistan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that the signing of the agreement has formalized the existing unilateral visa-free regime allowing citizens of both countries to travel for 30 days without a visa.

Maldivians can now travel to Tajikistan without a visa at a time arrangements were announced for Maldivians using diplomatic and official passports to travel to Azerbaijan without a visa for 90 days, on 15 November 2024.

During former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, close relationships were maintained with several foreign countries, and agreements were made for Maldivian citizens to travel to numerous foreign countries without visas.
