Geela Ali has presented her credentials as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Maldives to the Kingdom of Belgium.

Ambassador Geela presented her Letters of Credence to King Philippe of Belgium during a ceremony held at Château de Laeken in Brussels on Wednesday.

The ceremony was joined by First Secretary Mohamed Shaffau Ibrahim and Second Secretary at the Embassy of Maldives in Brussels Hassan Nawaaf.

Taking to social media platform ‘X’ following the credential ceremony, Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer expressed confidence that the ties of friendship between the two countries would continue to flourish during the new ambassador’s tenure.

Speaking at the private audience that followed the credential ceremony, King Philippe welcomed Ambassador Geela and congratulated her on the commencement of her ambassadorial tenure.

Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome extended to her, the ambassador conveyed greetings and best wishes from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the Maldivian people to the king and people of Belgium.

Assuring the king that the Maldivian government remains committed to enhance the bilateral ties between the two countries, the ambassador stated that the government of Maldives would collaborate with the Kingdom of Belgium to foster closer collaboration in areas of common interest such as climate change, sustainable development and tourism.

With over 30 years of experience in both the health sector and foreign service sector of the Maldives, the new Maldivian ambassador is a seasoned professional who began her career in foreign service back in 2015.

Some of the roles she has filled include Minister, Charge de Affairs at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the UN offices in Geneva, Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of Maldives in London (2016-2018) and Additional Secretary and Head of the Consular Services Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2018.
