The government of Maldives has co-sponsored the resolution to support the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member state of the United Nations.

The resolution to support the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member state of UN was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Friday.

Maldives was among the first states to co-sponsor the draft resolution.

The resolution was presented by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on behalf of the Arab Group.

Titled ‘Admission of new members to the United nations’, the resolution was considered following the resumption of the 10th Emergency Special Session.

Determining that the State of Palestine is qualified for membership in UN, the resolution recommends the Security Council to consider the matter favorably.

Further, it decides that Palestine will be given additional rights of participation within the UN system, starting from the 79th session of UNGA. 

The UNGA passed the resolution with 143 votes in favour, nine against and 25 abstentions.

Maldives back in April 2024 called on the UN Security Council to support the admission of the State of Palestine as a full member state of UN.

Maldives extended support during a statement delivered by Principal Secretary to the President on Foreign Relations Mohamed Naseer at the United Nations Security Council Quarterly Open Debate on the situation in the middle east. 

Principal Secretary Naseer called on the UN members, particularly on the permanent members of the UNSC to extend their full and unconditional support for the admission of the State of Palestine to the UN as a full member state.

Further, the government of Maldives also called on the UNSC to impose sanctions including an arms embargo on Israel for violating the Charter of the Council on several occasions. 

Maldives reiterated its support for a lasting solution to the conflict, through a two-state solution, with the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

On 2 April 2024, the State of Palestine submitted a letter to the UN Secretary General requesting renewed consideration to be given to the application of the State of Palestine for membership in the UN.
