A total of 127 hectares of land have been reclaimed from Gulhifalhu so far.
This was revealed by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib during a press conference hosted on Wednesday.
Speaking to press about the Gulhifalhu reclamation project, Minister Muththalib revealed that by March 17, 16.7 million cubic meters of land was reclaimed, estimated to be 127.9 hectares of land.
He added that the remaining 1.3 million hectares of land have to be reclaimed and that Boskalis will be able to reclaim the contracted amount within a month.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had earlier revealed that 85 more hectares would be reclaimed from Gulhifalhu.
The minister stated that this work would be carried out after the part of the existing contract is completed.
The development of Gulhifalhu, located about four kilometers from the capital Malé City, was included in the strategic plan of the former administration of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The reclamation of six million cubic meters of land from Gulhifalhu was contracted to Boskalis, a Dutch dredging company.
The project was contracted for USD 53 million, to be wrapped up within 180 days.
Boskalis has successfully implemented such projects in Maldives in the past as well. Some of these include the reconstruction of Vilufushi and Villingili after the 2004 Tsunami and the Gulhifalhu project since 2010.
