Former President and leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has left PPM.
This comes shortly after his legal attorney Dr. Mohamed Jameel revealed that he intends to form a new political party.
In a Twitter post on Thursday night, Dr. Jameel asserted that Yameen had put in every effort to change former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s regime, however, his vision no longer mirrors that of others in the leadership which has caused them to abandon Yameen.
Jameel revealed that the ex-president has since decided to quit the party and form a new political party.
Since the beginning of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration a week ago, his relationship with Yameen has noticeably soured, with rumors circulating that there was a division in the party.
Amid these controversies, President Muizzu too appears to have distanced himself from PPM and has setup a separate office of People’s National Congress (PNC).
With the appointment of many of those in the party’s leadership to top government positions, there have been several disagreements between them and ex-President Yameen.
With this, Yameen and his close accomplices announced that he has taken over a steering committee formed earlier.
At a time Yameen has left the party, Maleeh, who was also a part of the committee, was also recently removed from the party.
