Two international table tennis tournaments that were set to be held in the Maldives during this month, have been pushed back to 2022.

The Table Tennis Association of Maldives (TTAM) back in March announced that the Commonwealth Youth Tour tournament and the South Asian Junior and Cadet TT Championship will be held in the Maldives in August.

However, both tournaments have now been postponed to 2022 with TTAM President Ali Rasheed noting that this is due to the changes to the Asian and World Federation tournaments.

Ali added that the final dates will be confirmed in February 2022.

Holding international competitions in Maldives is a goal of the current administration, with President Ibrahim Mohamed reiterating this at the opening ceremony of the Hulhumalé TT Hall last December. He had hinted work for Maldives to host an international TT competition at the ceremony.

Maldives hosted the 24th South Asian Junior and Cadet TT Championship in 2018. In this tournament, two of Maldives’ shining table tennis stars, Fathimath Dheema Ali and Aishath Rafa Nazim achieved medals, Dheema earning a silver medal and Rafa earning a bronze.
