TM's key findings in the opening of the polls for Parliamentary Elections 2024

TM revealed that the opening of the polls was smooth and the administrative preparation went well, adding that 89.3 percent of polling booths opened by 08:10am and all polling stations were opened before 9am.

Further, nearly all polling station officials were in place at all polling stations and the materials required for voting were present and the ballot papers were counted at all the polling stations.

TM went on to reveal that 99 percent of ballot boxes were verified as empty at the opening of the polls.

Highlighting that candidate representatives and party observers were well represented across all polling booths, with one or more observers present at 93.7 percent of polling booths, TM revealed that officers of Maldives Police Service (MPS) were stationed outside of 95 percent of the observed polling stations at the time they opened.

Booths set up to ensure ballot secrecy in 96 percent of polling stations: TM

Transparency Maldives has revealed that polling stations were set up to ensure ballot secrecy, across 96 percent of polling booths, in the ongoing parliamentary elections 2024.

TM revealed that they are observing today’s polls with an observer network around the country spanning across Malé, outlying atolls, prison facilities, as well as abroad in Colombo, Sri Lanka and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

TM expressed gratitude to the nearly 270 observers and volunteers deployed across 205 booths across the Maldives as well as abroad, for their dedication in observing and assisting in the election observation processes.

TM is assessing both the election day proceedings and have monitored the larger electoral and political environment during the pre-election period, in observing the polls.

The results they have reported from their observation are generalizable to the entire country.

Polling is proceeding peacefully: HRCM

Here are some of the highlights that HRCM has identified so far while observing the parliamentary election 2024 voting process:

Voting began at 77 percent of the polling booths at the scheduled time of 8am. Primarily, the delay in the start of polling was due to delays in preparations to be made by officials.

Polling began by 8.35am latest, at observed boxes.

It has been observed that in all the polling areas, proper arrangements have been made to indicate the route of the polling booth.

So far, no issues have been identified. The voting process is going on peacefully.

Observation underway at polling booths: HRCM

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has dispatched teams to observe polling booths set up in 35 islands and one prison facility across 18 atolls, including the Greater Malé City.

The commission will observe ballot boxes set up at a total of 263 centers, including 93 in atolls, 168 in GMR and two prison facilities.

MDP will have a clear majority: President Solih

MDP's senior advisor and former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that he sees MDP getting a clear majority in today's parliamentary elections.

Speaking to press after casting his vote, he said that he hopes to see the party win in big cities and small islands as well. He expressed hope that the party would get a good majority.

President Muizzu urges all citizens to vote early

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has urged all citizens to visit their respective polling stations and cast their ballots, as early as possible.

Maximum 500 voters will cast ballot at each polling station: EC

EC revealed that a maximum of 500 voters will cast their ballots at each polling station as voting proceeds.

According to EC, a maximum of 500 will cast their ballots at each polling booth this election.

The commission has urged the public to visit polling centers early to cast their votes.

the 19th tenure of parliament had 87 constituencies. The seats have been increased for the 20th tenure.

The added seats are:

Two constituencies in Malé City

One constituency to Addu City

One seat to South Baa atoll

One seat to Malé Atoll

One seat to North Huvadhu atoll.

The ongoing People's Majlis tenure will end on 30 May 2024.
