MP Abdulla Riyaz has called on the state to disclose the findings of the investigation into former Ungoofaaru MP Afraasheem Ali’s murder in 2012.
Riyaz said the investigation was yet ongoing when he left his post as commissioner of police, and that it is imperative to public safety that the findings be revealed.
“There are no secrets, nothing that would affect national security, when I left office the investigation was still ongoing, the police need to unveil the updates” he said.
The police had arrested 22-year-old Hussain Humaam for the murder. He was convicted in 2013 citing a confession, witness testimony, and forensic evidence, and sentenced to death.
Humaan had later recanted his confession claiming it was given under duress – and that officers had threatened his family. The case was appealed at higher courts after the Criminal Court concluded that Humaam could not recant his confession.
On 24th June the Supreme Court upheld the conviction and death sentence despite concerns about the proceedings in his case. The state had also officially passed to enforce the penalty, ending the Maldives’ 60-year moratorium on capital punishment
