Police are investigating Jumhooree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim for disrupting national unity and inciting violence against the government.

Officers are investigating him for a speech he gave at Kunooz, the Jumhooree Party’s primary assembly site, on April 5th.

After the police summon on Wednesday evening, Qasim told the press that he is being investigated under section 610 of the penal code. This particular section, classified under ‘rioting’ outlaws inciting, aiding, or engaging in any ‘violent attempts to overthrow the government’.

He told the media that he believe the police should follow through with their duties and are free to probe into whatever case they see fit, adding that he was simply carrying out his duties as a parliamentary representative as well.

“The police lawfully questioning me over an investigation is no problem for me at all, it is not something that bothers me” he said.

Qasim further said he remains ‘unfazed’ by any possible intimidation and that he would continue with the ongoing reform efforts.

“I have acted in my capacity as a party leader, as a parliamentarian, as a member of the opposition for the good of my people and my country and I will continue to do so no matter whom it may cause discontent to” he continued.

The parliamentarian is already facing three charges for bribery, intimidation so as to thwart the conduct of a public officials, and attempts to influence a voter.
