CPJ calls on prosecutor to revoke charges against RaajjeTV journalist

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on the state to end drop its charges against journalist Mohamed Wisam, accused of obstruction of police duties.

Wisam was acquitted by the Criminal Court in March 28th, after the judge ruled that evidence could substantiate the charges against him.

“The prosecutor general’s insistence on continuing this baseless case against Mohamed Wisam and RaajjeTV is clearly intended to intimidate all journalists in the Maldives said CPJ’s Asia Program Coordinator, Steven Butler.

The state raised obstruction charges against Wisam on the 5th of April 2016, over an arrest made while covering an opposition rally on the 25th of March 2015.

Raajje Television responded with a statement maintaining that the charges were “solely intended to silence the channel”.
